Antique vase or vessel originally from the city of Djenné, in Mali (Africa). Piece made from 100% terracotta between the 12th and 16th centuries. The Inner Niger Delta, the region formed by the triangle of the cities of Mopti, Ke Macina and Djenné, bears witness to an astonishing artistic richness with objects in cast brass and wrought iron, clay bowls, and figures like this one. These vessels are uniquely unadorned, come in several sizes, and may have been used for offerings or simply as domestic objects. Their bases are irregular and they do not stand on their own (because the floors of the houses were also uneven), so each comes with its own pedestal.
